Cultivating a Lifelong Love of Art

“Deep Sea Swim” by Caroline Killhour

A Note from Owner Panna Cappelli

Did you know that Maui isn’t the only island I’ve lived on? In the early 1960s, my parents, my grandmother, and the five of us kids sailed into Christiansted Harbor in the U.S. Virgin Islands, and together we called the tiny island of St. Croix home for the next 15 years. I was just a toddler at the time, and the beautiful tropical land was our playground.

In 1966, a small art gallery named Many Hands opened in Christiansted, and I dropped in often to see what the local artists had brought in. I couldn’t help but be inspired, and soon enough I was making my own jewelry and small sculptures from a growing shell collection as well as selling my art at Many Hands. To this day, I still have a huge passion for shells and have one of the largest collections of Ni'ihau shell lei for sale in Hawai'i. (Click here to learn more about the shells of Ni’ihau on our website.)

I recently traveled back to St. Croix and was delighted to revisit the places where I spent my childhood, including Many Hands! When I entered the gallery and re-introduced myself to the owner, Robert Gleeson, he remembered me instantly despite my time there being many decades ago. Robert gave me a big hug, and I shared with him that when I opened my Maui gallery in 1992, I named it Maui Hands as a nod to my early days there.

Life can take us many places, leaving impressions that shape who we become. Without my family’s daring move from the mainland to an island, I would never have been exposed to the beauty of St. Croix and Many Hands, which ignited a lifelong passion for art and the artists who create it. My most sincere wish is that the artists we carry at Maui Hands inspire you in a way that sticks with you, and that you take a love of art with you wherever you go.

Calen Adams

Calen is a quiet, reflective, and ambitious artist. Self-taught, he was first inspired by his potter mother and watercolorist father. Calen enjoys watercolors for the technical aspects as well as the pure enjoyment of mixing paint with water. Creating his own textures and colors with the medium, his main focus is to capture Hawai'i’s historical scenes before they disappear.

Caroline Killhour

Working primarily in the media of watercolor, oil, wood block carving, painting, and printmaking, Caroline’s artwork demonstrates spatial depth juxtaposed with decorative, colorful surfaces and patterns. She employs diagonals and jolting shifts of perspective in order to establish spatial angles of vision similar to those used in Japanese prints. In order to create contrast, Caroline’s work also exhibits a decorative flatness that attracts the viewer’s eye to the surface of the work.

Cherie Attix

Cherie has spent two decades exploring a variety of printmaking techniques with an eye toward combining multiple approaches to the printing process. For the past few years, she has also been dyeing paper and textiles to create home goods, wearable art like silk scarves, and sculptures while continuing to print. Cherie’s inspiration comes from the vibrant beauty of Hawaiʻi nei. Her works are reflections of the natural world and, like nature, are always evolving and changing.

Jackie Johnston

Self-professed geeky web developer Jackie spent most of her life thinking she wasn’t able to draw or paint, but being included in the Hui No'eau’s 2023 Annual Juried Exhibition two years running definitely proves otherwise. Using her own photographs for inspiration, it’s her love of animals and the ocean that inspires her choice of subject matter.

Linda Whittemore

Linda studied art in California at the university level and extensively with individual teachers and masters. She is in many private and public collections and has been selected for, and won awards in, numerous juried shows. Linda’s works are a story of color and mood, reflecting a Maui lifestyle, and her latest oil paintings on wood are a prelude to her original monotypes. “It’s all a process, one medium leads to the next. We create from what we know or don't know. My paintings are who I am.”
