A New Year, A Fresh Start

A Note from Owner Panna Cappelli

The past few months have been a whirlwind. I was able to visit the space where my Front Street Lahaina gallery once stood, and it was heartbreaking to sift through the ashes of a place where so much joy once was. It’s difficult to recall individual days or weeks, but what sticks with me most through everything that’s happened is the giving nature of our clients and artists.

After the devastating fires on August 8, we reached out to you to help raise money for our displaced Lahaina employee Taylor, her husband Al, and their cat Tig, as well as seven displaced artists Maui Hands represents, the Maui Strong Fund, and Lahaina schools.

Thanks to your generosity, Maui Hands was able to send significant funds to those close to us as well as the community at-large. Here are the numbers you helped make happen!

  • $43,469 raised during our September-November Disaster Relief Fundraiser

  • $18,609 raised via our GoFundMe for Taylor, Al, and Tig

  • $8,294 raised in direct-from-client donations to the Maui Strong Fund

  • $4,098 raised during our one-day percentage fundraiser on August 12, 2023

  • $1,890 raised via the Aloha for Lahaina Art Auction in partnership with the Hawaii Department of Education, the Public Schools of Hawaii Foundation, J Levy Gallery, and Island Art Galleries, Oahu

It will take time for our beloved Lahaina to come back to us. In the interim, so much need still exists when it comes to providing displaced families permanent housing solutions and supporting Maui’s economy for the long-term. New Arrivals for the New Year

Joy Zion

Originally from the Philippines, Joy grew up in Paia, Maui. In addition to creating jewelry, she loves to cook, travel to new places, and dive for seashells and pearls around the Hawaiian Islands and the Philippines. Using both freshwater and Tahitian varieties, Joy’s precious pearls come in every color of the rainbow.

“When I put on a piece of jewelry, I feel beauty, joy, and a sense of completeness, and I long to design pieces that evoke those feelings in others as well. Being an island girl, I find my inspiration in aloha, the ocean, the jungle, and the mountains.”

Aviel “Avi” Doran

Avi is a self-taught artist who grew his love for art while living in Santa Barbara, California. He has a passion for all things involving nature and color, and he sheds light on nature’s beauty through his work. Avi’s use of vibrant color makes for eye-catching pieces that stand out.

Avi creates his pieces by directly dropping ink onto the surface of a ceramic tile and manipulating it by tilting the tile and letting the ink bleed and/or using a Q-tip, cotton ball, and canned air. The medium itself is very hard to control, making each work one of a kind.

Daniel Francisco Parra Ochoa

Born in Atlanta, Georgia, Daniel is the first generation of his family born in the U.S. When Daniel was 22 years old, he fulfilled one of his dreams by working at a wolf sanctuary, which gave him a sincere appreciation for all animals and the part they play in our ecosystem.

Daniel continues his journey to bring more attention to critically endangered animals and plants through his art, and is best known for his exquisite attention to detail and storytelling through the art of ink using fine liners, brushes, and stippling. Recurring concepts in his works are those that relate to ornithology, marine life, skulls, and endemic flowers, all used to create a story between life, death, and rebirth.

Chris Allen

Chris started his exploration with Hawaiian woods in high school woodshop on the Big Island of Hawaii. From working at the world-famous woodshop House of Kalai with Tommy Leong, to moving back to the Big Island to work at Kama'aina Woods, he turned bowls, made bracelets, and learned a lot about the many ways of woodcraft. Soon after meeting Hawaiian calabash bowl maker Dan Deluz, Chris started his own woodshop where he made everything from bowls to bookmarks.

Chris learned much from Dan, who let him watch while he made bowls and provided pointers as Chris worked, as well as Bob Bowman, who helped Chris perfect the fine art of bowl turning. Chris also worked for Dan for a time and is inspired by his mastery of the craft.

And much more to explore!
