About Hawaiian Koa Wood

Acacia koa is a species of flowering tree that is endemic to the Hawaiian Islands. Koa comes in a beautiful range of colors – from very light and deep red to dark chocolate brown – and figure (the ability of the grain in the wood to catch and reflect light), which ranges from plain and fancy to the more spectacular and rare curly and fiddleback. One of the state’s greatest natural resources and possibly the most expensive wood in the world, the koa items you see today are crafted from old cuts, windfall, or dead trees.

Fun fact: The word koa means “brave, bold, fearless, or warrior” in Hawaiian, and the historically plentiful wood became known by this name because of its early use in canoes and weapons.
