About The Artwork ~ Daniel’s Story
“The story behind this piece came to me while I was reflecting on humanity as a whole. What keeps recurring to me as I continue to draw, learn, and study more about Hawaii’s native animals is that, although we are doing as much as we can to clean up our earth, we are also the reason why the clean up has to happen in the first place. In the end, we’re just doing our best to clean up our mess. Our earth will be okay, she will regenerate. However, no matter what we do, we impact each other and the earth. If we forget about our duty here as caretakers to the land and to each other, perhaps we are inevitably forgetting about our own existence too; the human existence.
“Can the earth continue to sustain our ever-changing rhythms of modern civilization? Can we? This drawing is a representation of just that. Man, throwing up the shaka one last time. Hang loose everyone! It could be a bumpy ride. The birds featured in this drawing are the ʻakiapōlāʻau, one of many honeycreeper species that are endangered on the Big Island of Hawaii.”
