About The Artwork
Kou, a small- to medium-sized evergreen tree, is a canoe plant brought to and spread across the Hawaiian Islands. Able to grow easily and quickly from seed, this species was valued as a carving wood due to the beauty of its grain and ease of cutting and carving. Because of its thick wide crown of leaves, kou was a favorite shade tree near home sites. This tree can be distinguished by showy orange flowers that are 1-2 inches in diameter.
