ANIMA: Doorways of Perception @ Maui Arts and Cultural Center, Maui ~ From the MACC: “The Hawai'i Island-based collective, Consensual Lack of Reality, includes Pier Fichefeux, Stephen Freedman, Andrzej Kramarz, and Daniel Sheinfeld Rodriguez. Their distinct approaches reveal the life inherent in their materials and subjects, evoking the idea that spirit, soul, and consciousness exist similarly in humans, animals, plants, and geographic features of the environment. This exhibition integrates varied forms such as ceramic totems, tarnished photographs, charred plywood reliefs, and sun-exposed images in moments that are monumental in scale and intimately reflective of the human experience.” Through June 10 ~ visit mauiarts.org/exhibits for more information.
Reveries: The Art of Hung Liu @ Honolulu Museum of Art, Oahu ~ From the HoMA: “In celebration of the recent acquisitions of three Hung Liu paintings, HoMA will present an exhibition focused on contemporary artist Hung Liu (1948–2021). One of the best-known contemporary Chinese American artists, Liu’s paintings and mixed media works reference both East and West and straddle the line between the personal and the political… Known for working from historical photographs, Liu drew from China’s long history and her own experiences in order to represent people who had historically been invisible or marginalized.” Through May 28 ~ visit honolulumuseum.org/exhibitions for more information.
Young Artists of Hawai'i 2023 @ Hawai'i State Art Museum, Oahu ~ From the Hawai'i State Foundation on Culture and the Arts: “Young Artists of Hawai'i is an annual student art competition and exhibition. Presented by the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts, the Hawai'i Tourism Authority, and Gravitas Pasifika, this program recognizes creative excellence among Hawai'i’s public and private school students, kindergarten through seventh grade. A panel of judges select 96 works for the exhibition.” Opening May 20 ~ visit hisam.hawaii.gov/exhibits for more information. | | May Artists-In-Residence
