Terris Nguyen Temple, was the first westerner trained in the art of Tibetan thangka painting (Nepal 1966-75) taught by Jampa Tsedan, His Holiness the Dalai Lama's artist. Terris has taught thangka painting since 1974.
On Maui since 1976, he’s been painting birds and flowers. Many of which are Hawaii’s unique and endangered species, he is passionate on the preservation of our environment for future generations. Between 1992-2007 Terris and his wife Leslie Nguyen Temple created 3 large applique thangkas for Tsurphu, the Karmapa's main seat in Tibet. These works are shown annually during major cultural festivals at Tsurphu, a tradition begun in 1590 at the monastery.
For the past twenty years, the Temples have been the official artists to His Holiness the 17th Gyalwa Karmapa and Tsurphu Monastery in Tibet. The couple is presently working on another 120' applique for the monastery. Traditional and contemporary painting, film making, published works, and Tibetan projects keep Terris very active. As well as contemporary works, and commissions, Terris Nguyen Temple is still making significant contributions to Tibetan Art. He continues to create art in his studio in Maui and travels between there, India, Tibet and the UK.
