June 2014 Art Shows

Kathleen O'Bryan

Paia, June - Kathleen O'Bryan

MAUI HANDS GALLERY AT 84 HANA HWY, PAIA, PRESENTS MAUI'S PREMIER PASTELIST KATHLEEN O'BRYAN EVERY MONDAY IN JUNE FROM 11:00AM TO 3:00PM

Makawao pastelist Kathleen O'Bryan has made her living as professional fine artist for more than 35 years, participating in solo, group and juried exhibitions in world-class cultural art markets in Santa Fe, New Mexico and Maui, Hawai‘i.

As a fine art colorist, Kathleen discovered that with undiluted, dry pigment soft pastello, she could create saturated hues that brought emotional expressions to expansive skies and infinite landscapes. She found that painting on black paper rather than white as her ground eliminates all light and wave competition, which allows the pastel medium to achieve the radiant brilliance found in nature.

Christina DeHoff

Lahaina, June - Christina DeHoff

MAUI HANDS GALLERY AT 612 FRONT STREET, LAHAINA PRESENTS SOULFUL PAINTER CHRISTINA DEHOFF IN RESIDENCE EVERY MONDAY IN JUNE FROM 2:30PM TO 6:00PM

Christina DeHoff has many facets as an artist. A clear and recognizable theme runs through both her figurative visionary paintings and her landscape paintings. That theme is soulfulness. One can feel the presence of grace and love in her depiction of heart expanding oceans, sensual rolling hills and dream filled skies. The same emotions are equally potent in Christina's figurative paintings. She has a unique, tender and intuitive way of communicating that which is sacred in this human experience.

Raised in Maine Christina now makes her home on the island of Maui. After graduating from the University of Maine in 1995 with a BS in Art Education, Christina created, owned and operated the Gallery at 357 Main in Rockland, Maine. For 10 years she represented over 50 artists. In 1999 Christina hung the first solo show of her own paintings, which proved very successful. Within two weeks all 30 paintings had sold. For the next 7 years she exhibited her paintings annually, with the same level of success. In 2006 Christina sold the gallery to pursue her art full time.

Christina's artwork explores the many layers of the human spirit. "I continue to feel a calling to create paintings that tell stories of the heart and serve as reminders to the viewer that our lives are full of so much possibility".

Joel Heinz

Paia, June - Joel Heinz

MAUI HANDS GALLERY AT 84 HANA HWY, PAIA PRESENTS JOEL HEINZ AND HIS KAPA PAINTINGS JUNE 4TH, 11TH, AND 25TH FROM 1:00PM TO 3:00PM

Joel began painting with no formal art training other than what he was able to pick up in school, from associating with other artists and from the joys of experimentation and discovery. When he painted the sea and all the delightful things therein, it brought him peace; when he dabbled in Egyptian art, it developed his technique for detailed art and led to his success as an artist today.

He has since gained a greater appreciation for the Hawaiian culture, and is particularly intrigued by ancient designs on tapa cloth and by Hawaiian petroglyphs. Joel now combines these two cultural icons, creating acrylic paintings of ancient Hawaiian imagery on tapa cloth. He also found a new skill in sculpting precious koa wood, using the same imagery as in his paintings. Joel loves what he does and so do the many people who have purchased his work.

Richard says, "I have an exhilarating passion to fuse color and creativity onto metal panels. That comes from my compassion to impact lives with new vision, motivation and inspiration. In decades of working with men and women, who have faced difficulty in life, find spiritual strength, I've learned to impart beauty, amazement and joy to the recipient, creating a tranquil and peaceful atmosphere. That can change lives. My sole accomplishment and reward for my work, he explains, is to see the smiling faces reflecting back from my work and having the privilege to know that I've added joy and inspiration to a human life."
