"I have lived in Lahaina most of my life and attended Kamehameha III School and Lahainaluna High School. I am part Hawaiian on my mom’s side and “Haole” on my dad’s side. I have always loved art and did take classes throughout my life but when I got married and started to raise my family (5 boys), drawing and painting were pushed to the side. Today, I’m still living in Lahaina and having a great time painting like crazy. My other interests are sewing, reading, cooking and baking, crafts, and I take classes and teach Hula."

Lee Olulani Plevny

Makawao, May-LeeOlulaniPlevny

MAUI HANDS GALLERY IN MAKAWAO WELCOMES LEE OLULANI PLEVNY AS ARTIST IN RESIDENCE EVERY FRIDAY IN MAY FROM 11-3.

"My artistic practice engages the Hawaiian Islands—its landscape, sea life, animals and people—as I explore my heritage and deep connection to my ohana, my family, through clay. I seek to reflect the beauty and mystery of the ocean and sea life surrounding Maui and the open spirit of aloha permeating the culture. I begin by throwing porcelain and white stoneware to create a vessel. I move to hand-building which informs the shape and story of the piece transforming it into its final form as a bowl, vase or platter. I develop my own glazes to capture the rich blues and greens of the island then fire two or three time to build depth and complexity. When complete, each piece “talks story” about the Hawaiian world I experience."
