May 2015 Art Shows

Amanda Scott

Lahaina, May - Amanda Scott

MAUI HANDS GALLERY AT 612 FRONT STREET, LAHAINA PRESENTS WATERCOLOR ARTIST AMANDA SCOTT TWO WEDNESDAYS IN MAY FROM 10:30AM - 2:30PM. COME SEE THIS CHARMING YOUNG ARTIST PRACTICE HER PYROGRAPHY TECHNIQUES.

Amanda Scott has been a dedicated artist for over ten years. Her muse is usually the female figure, which she renders beautifully in a variety of ethnic contexts, primarily Polynesian. She is continuously learning new techniques from teachers, books and other artists.

"I make art because, for a while, I am transported to a fantasy world of my own creation. I've often wondered if I could be more practical, less of a dreamer. However, every time I've thought of giving away my paints it felt like I was dying. My paintings celebrate and explore man and womankind. My journey as an artist is inspired by the light that imbues one's life when one pursues their joy."

Julie Houck

Makawao, May - Julie Houck

MAUI HANDS GALLERY AT 1169 MAKAWAO AVE. PRESENTS PAINTER AND ENCAUSTIC ARTIST JULIE HOUCK. COME MEET THE ARTIST AND SEE A COLLECTION OF HER BEAUTIFUL PIECES EVERY FRIDAY IN MAY FROM 12:30PM - 5:00PM.

Julie's art career began in Boston, where she was a professional photographer for 17 years. Her talent for location photography kept her on the road for much of the year photographing in Europe, Asia and across much of the US. In 1995, Julie decided to pursue a career as a painter. "Back when I was in college, I loved my art classes the most. I decided to redirect and pursue what I loved. My career as a professional photographer taught me about composition and the importance of light, I find these skills come into play when I paint." Julie's studied with contemporary realist painters who based their instruction on the classical principals of direct observation of color, light and form relationships in nature. She studied at the Atelier of Classical Realism in San Francisco with David Hardy, the Academy of Fine Art in Seattle with Anthony Ryder, and most recently in France at the L'Ecole Albert Defois with Ted Seth Jacobs. Julie's paintings are exhibited extensively in Hawaii. Her work is part of the permanent collections of the Hawaii State Foundation on Culture and the Arts and the Hawaii State Art Museum. She was one of the featured artists at the commemorative "Artists of Hawaii" exhibit at the Honolulu Academy of Art in 2000 and has been juried into Art Maui six times. A Signature Member of Plein Air Painters of Maui, Julie also teaches plein art painting on Maui and in France.View Julie Houck's Artwork

Jeanne Young

Paia, May - Jeanne Young

MAUI HANDS GALLERY AT 84 HANA HWY IN PAIA PRESENTS PAINTER JEANNE YOUNG. COME MEET JEANNE AND WATCH HER PROCESS AND TECHNIQUES EVERY THURSDAY IN MAY FROM 12:00PM - 4:00PM.

I was born in Portland, Oregon, spent most of my adult life and some of my childhood in rural Alaska. In the area I was raised, there weren’t schools for the kind of art I wanted to make so I developed an education strategy for myself and eventually travelled to study under artists who had mastered the skills I wanted to have.

I’ve been showing professionally since 2004. I’ve won national awards for painting, have been commissioned to do life-size bronze sculptures, taught many workshops and classes. I came to Maui for vacation and was invited to join a gallery in Lahaina. I fell in love with the North shore, flew to Alaska long enough to finish a bronze sculpture commission, and came back to Hawaii to begin my new adventure.

I explore any subject and style that stimulates my artistic passion. Eventually I always seem to come back to people and all the beautiful ways that we engage with life. A favorite subject is people and water. The energy and power of the ocean combined with the seemingly effortless skill of surfers in the waves is so much fun for me to paint. There’s just something about taking all my old-school training and applying it to such a joyful pursuit that brings me great satisfaction.
