February 2014 Art Shows

Alexa Caskey

Lahaina, February - Alexa Caskey

MAUI HANDS GALLERY AT 612 FRONT STREET, LAHAINA PRESENTS PAINTER ALEXA CASKEY, EVERY FRIDAY IN FEBRUARY FROM 4:30PM TO 7:30PM. ALEXA CAPTURES THE BEAUTIFUL, COMPLEX NATURAL WONDER OF THE OCEAN AND TRANSLATES IT FLAWLESSLY ONTO CANVAS. CATCH ALEXA BEFORE SHE LEAVES FOR NINE MONTHS OF SCHEDULED ART SHOWS SPANNING FLORIDA TO THE WEST COAST.

Alexa’s love for the ocean is evident not only in her work, which she describes as “exaggerated realism”, but in her daily life and the path that has led her to reside in Maui. From an early age she developed a love for the sea which led her to studying Ocean Engineering at Florida Atlantic University between long surf sessions. Here she began to integrate her passion for the ocean with a natural inclination towards art and personal expression. Alexa’s current style began to take shape as she soaked in the beach life and her focus, and subject, shifted to landscapes and tropical animals as well as a venture into the world of shaping and painting surfboards.

Ultimately, Alexa considers the ability to capture the essence of the ocean and its waves a huge honor and hopes that in allowing this beauty to be enjoyed anywhere she can, in some manner, help in the efforts to preserve our majestic oceans.

I've been making art since I can remember and my style is now at a place I'm really confident with. My art and life alike are inspired by my love for the ocean and nature in general. I hope my work inspires people to enjoy, appreciate, and take care of the planet, because there's no "planet B". Eventually I would like to form a non-profit to support conservation efforts.

Joel Heinz

Ka’anapali, February - Joel Heinz

MAUI HANDS GALLERY AT THE HYATT REGENCY, KA’ANAPALI, PRESENT KAPA ARTIST JOEL HEINZ EVERY WEDNESDAY IN FEBRUARY FROM 11AM TO 3PM. A COLLECTION OF CURRENT WORKS ARE ON DISPLAY. COME MEET JOEL AND LEARN ABOUT THIS INTRIGUING ART FORM.

Joel began painting with no formal art training other than what he was able to pick up in school, from associating with other artists and from the joys of experimentation and discovery. When he painted the sea and all the delightful things therein, it brought him peace; when he dabbled in Egyptian art, it developed his technique for detailed art and led to his success as an artist today.

He has since gained a greater appreciation for the Hawaiian culture, and is particularly intrigued by ancient designs on tapa cloth and by Hawaiian petroglyphs. Joel now combines these two cultural icons, creating acrylic paintings of ancient Hawaiian imagery on tapa cloth. He also found a new skill in sculpting precious koa wood, using the same imagery as in his paintings. Joel loves what he does and so do the many people who have purchased his work.
