Influenced by Picasso’s work and sometimes similar to Chagall’s, her artworks range from pastels to watercolor and acrylics, frequently embellished with torn papers, gesso, shiny objects, foil and other oddments that may provide interest and dimension. Deeply moved by the illustrations of classic children’s literature, she has written, illustrated and published two children’s books.

Jeanne Young

Paia, December-JeanneYoung

MAUI HANDS GALLERY AT 84 HANA HWY, PAIA, WELCOMES JEANNE YOUNG AS ARTIST IN RESIDENCE EVERY TUESDAY IN DECEMBER FROM 1-5. COME BY AND WATCH THIS ARTIST PAINT HER ISLAND INSPIRED ART

I’ve been showing professionally since 2004. I’ve won national awards for painting, have been commissioned to do life-size bronze sculptures, taught many workshops and classes. I came to Maui for vacation and was invited to join a gallery in Lahaina. I fell in love with the North shore, flew to Alaska long enough to finish a bronze sculpture commission, and came back to Hawaii to begin my new adventure. I explore any subject and style that stimulates my artistic passion. Eventually I always seem to come back to people and all the beautiful ways that we engage with life. A favorite subject is people and water. The energy and power of the ocean combined with the seemingly effortless skill of surfers in the waves is so much fun for me to paint. There’s just something about taking all my old-school training and applying it to such a joyful pursuit that brings me great satisfaction.

WillowNorris

Makawao, December-Willow Norris

MAUI HANDS GALLERY IN MAKAWAO. WELCOMES WILLOW NORRIS AS ARTIST IN RESIDENCE FRIDAYS, DECEMBER 4 AND 11 FROM 11-3 AND DECEMBER 18 (THIRD FRIDAY). SHE WILL ALSO BE PAINTING IN THE GALLERY MONDAY DECEMBER 21 FROM 11-3. COME BY AND WATCH THIS ARTIST PAINT

Willow Norris is a meticulous artist and spends a great deal of time perfectly rendering her pieces. She begins with a detailed drawing on high quality archival watercolor paper. She then applies a variety of water soluble lightfast pigments with sable hair watercolor brushes and it is this slow build-up of up to 20 washes that gives the bold richness of color to her pieces. Drawing from her past experience with aquatinting, scraping and burnishing, and incorporating the use of fine pigmented wax, her paintings are truly mixed media.
