January 2014 Art Shows

Kathleen O'Bryan

Lahaina, January - Kathleen O'Bryan

MAUI HANDS GALLERY AT 612 FRONT STREET, LAHAINA PRESENTS PASTELIST KATHLEEN O’BRYAN EVERY FRIDAY IN JANUARY FROM 4:30 TO 7:30 PM

Makawao pastelist Kathleen O'Bryan has made her living as professional fine artist for more than 35 years, participating in solo, group and juried exhibitions in world-class cultural art markets in Santa Fe, New Mexico and Maui, Hawai'i.

As a fine art colorist, Kathleen discovered that with undiluted, dry pigment soft pastello, she could create saturated hues that brought emotional expressions to expansive skies and infinite landscapes. She found that painting on black paper rather than white as her ground eliminates all light and wave competition, which allows the pastel medium to achieve the radiant brilliance found in nature.

Joyce Bezusko

Ka’anapali, January - Joyce Bezusko

MAUI HANDS GALLERY AT THE HYATT REGENCY, KA'ANAPALI, PRESENTS THE UNIQUE, RETRO AND WILDLY CREATIVE ART JEWELRY PIECES OF JOYCE BEZUSKO. COME MEET THIS ENGAGING ARTIST MONDAYS IN JANUARY FROM 1PM TO 4 PM

The studio of Joyce Bezusko is found on the shores of Maui where her passion is fueled by the ever-changing ocean, calming breezes, majestic mountains and lush greenery. It is there she creates her one-of-a-kind cuff bracelets, pendants, belt buckles and wall pieces.

Each piece is designed with that special individual in mind. Edgy, elegant, whimsical and over the top are specialties of Joyce's art form while enjoying the challenge of originality and custom creations.

With a deep appreciation for retro and love affair with the "Old Hollywood" romance of vintage jewelry, she is able to craft a unique and captivating blend of modern nostalgia.

Joyce's use of primarily existing materials maintains her respect for lowering her carbon footprint proving beautiful works of art and nature can co-exist.

Joyce says, “KEEP YOUR DREAMS HIGH AND YOUR SPIRIT HIGHER”

Diane Norman

Paia, January - Diane Norman

MAUI HANDS GALLERY AT 84 HANA HWY, PAIA PRESENTS MIXED MEDIA PAINTER DIANE NORMAN EVERY FRIDAY IN JANUARY FROM 11:00 TO 2:00.

Diane Norman loves to create. She is fascinated with the ocean from above and below the surface, and her experiences swimming and snorkeling in the Ahihi Bay area permeate every watercolor.

The sky, the colors and patterns of the water, and the lava forms emerging from the Pacific are endless sources of wonder and inspiration to Diane. At times a specific scene sparks the creative process, but at others simply the feeling of being immersed in the immensity of Maui's coastal beauty engenders new work.

Diane's collages are crafted with watercolor on heavy 300 lb Arches watercolor paper. Larger papers are first painted and textured and then are cut and torn to size. The background piece is glued to illustration board, and smaller pieces follow. The finished collage is extremely sturdy, and the layering of papers creates an illusion of depth. Each collage is a little jewel, to be appreciated from up close but visually strong enough to make a statement from across the room.

Claire Blahnik

Makawao, January - Claire Blahnik

MAUI HANDS GALLERY AT 1169 MAKAWAO AVE. PRESENTS OIL PAINTER CLAIRE BLAHNIK IN RESIDENCE EVERY FRIDAY IN JANUARY FROM 11AM TO 3PM.

Every day, I am inspired by the beautiful island of Maui. I grew up on this island, only leaving for a few years for college to study watercolor. I excelled at it. When I moved back, I decided to dive into oil painting. I feel that oils capture the beauty of Maui more than other mediums. This has opened a new world for me. I am constantly learning and evolving with every painting. When I escape into my artwork, I enter another world where I can dwell for hours.

I am an avid beach goer, sun lover, and take pleasure in all Maui has to offer. My paintings capture the essence of the beautiful places I have surfed, swam, and played. In my work, I represent my favorite aspects of the island lifestyle and culture.
