Everything we make is hand sculpted out of clay. The
clay is then pounded by hand to achieve the lava texture. After drying
and one firing they are ready for the glazing and Raku process. Glaze
is a combination of raw elements like, iron oxide, cobalt, and feldspar
and blended with water. Glaze turns into glass at a certain temperature.
The pottery is rapidly heated to around 2,500 degrees in a gas kiln.
Once the piece is glowing red it is removed by hand from the kiln
and placed into a pit full of combustibles; wherein, the unglazed
clay is turned black from the carbon in the fire, and smoke. The
brilliant glaze explodes into a colorful reaction from the heat,
and lack of oxygen. Each piece slowly cools and solidifies. We then
hand-clean and sign them. Erica and I have fired over 7,000 Raku
kiln loads. Everything is made with aloha, here on Maui. |
