Low Impact Jewelry by McKenna Hallett
"I want to create objects of art with a minimum of impact on Our
Planet and to this end I will never use electricity or heat or corrosive
chemicals to construct my jewelry and I will use as few items as possible
from newly manufactured sources."
I live in a nearly 70 year old plantation house in one of the oldest towns
in the Islands. It is a slow paced life compared to the mainland and after
17 years I cannot imagine calling anyplace else home. There is a natural
calming, a relaxation reflex that oversees life here on Maui and especially
in my Old Wailuku Town, tucked away at the base of an ancient volcano. Walking
the beaches to find my 'supplies' just adds to my serenity and that serenity
cascades into my designs which have often been called meditative or Zen-like.
Finding art in nearly everything is easy when you can relax and refocus.
All my jewelry is very light! This is a big surprise to most everyone who
picks up a piece for the first time. Almost every pair of earrings weigh
in at less than a dime. Few if any ever weigh more than a nickel - for
the pair! None of the pendants weigh more than a strand of pearls and
they are completely and very quickly adjusted to wear at any length you
desire."
