Hawaiian Fish Hooks by Steve Parcher
Steve Parcher, from Hana, Maui has been part of Maui Hands since he was a teenager. He is also an accomplished glass blower and painter. He gets his inspiration from his beautiful surroundings and the wonderful people of Hana. His work is completely hand made from materials gathered in Hana. Some of his designs are his original idea and most, to show his respect for the Hawaiian people, are made as closely as possible to resemble old Hawaiian hooks found in archaeological digs. He uses pig and cow bone and milo wood.
"Fish hooks were very important to the Hawaiian people and fishing ohanas (families) were held in high regard. Hooks of long ago were made from bone, wood, shell or a composite of these. Maui, the demigod for whom our island is named was a fisherman. My hooks are made by hand replicating the old style."
The largest hook shown (PANA) is 4" x 2.4" in size.
