The art of Jennifer Owen
I am a ceramic artist and instructor at Maui Community College and Hui No'eau Visual Arts Center. Most of my ceramics are fired at my studio in the salt kiln that I built ten years ago. In a salt firing, the pieces are glazed only on the inside to make sure that they will be totally waterproof (they are all food safe). When the kiln reaches 2300 degrees, I spend the next two hours gradually throwing ten pounds of salt into the kiln. The sodium vapors from the salt turn the surfaces of the pottery and ceramic sculpture into a glaze, giving the pieces their characteristic irregular sheen and an orange peel texture. Because I do not decorate with glaze colors, I often use colored clay inlays (thinly sliced 'mille fiore' medallions.
Or, I use painted colored clay slips for decoration, layered, and thrown on the potter's wheel to later carve into 'agateware'. I use many techniques to build my pieces including hand throwing, pinching, slab building and coil building. Perhaps because I am a teacher, I like to practice a wide range of techniques in my own work.
