The art of McCormick Fine Woodworking
For over 35 years, Richard McCormick has been crafting one of a kind museum quality works of art in his modest one man shop. He has earned 'best of show' awards, has been published in books and magazines, and his works of wood are in the personal collections of homes and offices in Colorado, Texas, Arizona, California, and Hawaii.
Though mainly self-taught, McCormick has studied under European and American masters. He believes in strict adherence to the principals of traditional time-honored furniture construction which incorporates the use of joinery and techniques handed down from generations. McCormick's woodworking journey began in the early 1970's when he began studying early furniture found in the great museums of Europe and New England. "The hand work and time necessary to correctly craft furniture of the early period styles is extreme, however, there is no better way to learn the fundamentals of high-end furniture construction than through the design and crafting of such traditional pieces." It is upon this foundation that he has evolved over the years.
As an avid mountain climber and novice guide in Colorado for many years, McCormick's mountaineering endeavors eventually led him to climb among the highest peaks on earth in the Himalaya of Nepal. While he continues to love the mountains, his roots as a 60's surfer during high school and college drew him back to the ocean here in Hawaii where he can be found in the water nearly every morning near dawn. His love of the sea and the mountains has had a profound influence on his life and those experiences often reflect in his work. His wife Charlene, is also very involved in his woodworking ideas and designs. They truly love Hawaii, its people, culture, and its abundant beauty. "These islands are a place of grand inspiration to me."
