The art of Mort Luby
Mort, who works from a studio in Haiku, creates scenes that mirror
every corner of Maui, from Front Street to the Road to Hana. "I also
do a lot of beach scenes," says Luby, "because my wife loves to go to
Baldwin, Secret Beach and Maalaea and read very thick novels. I like
being with her." He paints in watercolor and oils. "People ask me which I prefer," he
says. "I usually answer that each is so terrifically hard that it's
hard to pick a favorite."
Winner of more than 40 awards in various local, regional and national
competitions, Mort recently scored his fourth best-of-show citation.
His work can be seen in civic buildings, libraries, corporate
headquarters and private collections in more than a dozen nations. He
likes to boast that he's visited almost every important art museum in
the world. "You can't beat the Sorolla museum in Madrid," he says. "Now there was a guy who could paint beaches!"
Mort has studied with almost every major American master, including
Romel de la Torre, Charles Movali, John Howard Sanden, and Clyde
Aspevig. He is a member of the Oil Painters of America and paints
regularly with the Plein
Air Painters of Maui. He also studied art at the University of Notre
Dame, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree, the University of
Wisconsin and the Scottsdale Art School.
Before devoting his life to art and painting, Mort was the CEO of Luby
Publishing, a Chicago-based publisher of sports magazines. He was also
a stringer for Associated Press for nearly 40 years, covering events
in dozens of countries.
