The art of Mike Holford
Mike moved to Maui from Coeur'd Alene, Idaho in 1986 to escape the
snow and grey days of winters. He has been etching for about three years
and finds something new in every piece, and is constantly looking for new
and different kinds of glass to work with.
Mike employs three different styles of etching, Surface, Shading or Carving.
Of these Carving is the most time consuming but also the most rewarding
for him. The glass is carved to different depths in stages to give dimension,
which
interacts with light to produce the highlights of the carving.
In all of the above styles, each piece must have a resist (stencil like) applied
and the areas to be etched are removed (cut out). These resists are sometimes
very elaborate even complex.
