The art of Joel P. Heinz

Joel P. HeinzI began painting acrylic on canvas in 1995. I have had no formal art training other than what I was able to pick up in public schools. All of my art training has come from associating with other artists and the joy of experimenting and discovery. My favorite subject is Tropical Marine; I love it so. When I paint the sea and all the delightful things therein, it brings me peace; then, everything else falls into place.

I later dabbled in Egyptian art for a short time to develop my technique for detailed art. You will notice that the majority of my paintings are quite detailed. I like my artwork to be clearly seen whether viewed right up close or from across the room.

In recent years, visiting and living in Maui, I have gained a greater appreciation for the Hawaiian culture, both past and present. This has resulted in subject-matter changes in my recent expressions in art. I was particularly intrigued by ancient designs on Kapa (also known as Tapa) cloth and by ancient petroglyph rock carvings. For this reason I began to combine these two cultural icons into my paintings, emulating the texture of Kapa and painting petroglyphs and other subjects in the sepia tones one might expect to see in ancient art.  I have also taken artist's license to create a few of my own petroglyph designs that do not exist in ancient rock carvings.

When I sell one of my original paintings, I retain the copyright. With this copyright, I have been able to make available for sale at reasonable prices a number of photographic reproductions of my canvases in several sizes as matted prints, giclee's (reproduction on canvas), note cards, and even coasters.

After much encouragement from friends and fans, I recently began sculpting some of my favorite Hawaiian petroglyphs in KOA wood, a wonderfully beautiful hard wood treasured and native to Hawaii. Unfortunately, Koa is quickly becoming a disappearing resource in the islands, which further adds to its desirability.

I have also been blessed with a source for Tongan Tapa Cloth (called Kapa cloth in Hawaii). I have recently begun painting on this precious material and have been very pleased with the results.

I sincerely hope my work gives you as much enjoyment and pleasure as it does me in creating it.
