The art of Kalei Engel
Mana
Sculptures -
Hand Sculptured Recycled Paper, developed from the ancient art
of papier maché, is a long but very fulfilling process. Starting
with shredded office paper, soaked and blended to create a pulp and then
hand sculptured, each piece is sun-dried, painted and sealed for lasting
life. Some pieces are colored with Alii, the natural red clay
found in the cliffs and stream beds of the Hawaiian Islands, with its
rich earthy color. All the pieces are lightly brushed with gold leaf.
The pieces look like they could be metal, stone, or ceramic, but they
are recycled paper, very light weight and strong. The inspiration for Kalei's
most recent work, hand sculptured Hula dancers, comes from her deep love
and respect for the ancient Hula, Kahiko,
having had the privilege of studying with a wonderful Kumu Hula (teacher)
